Residence in East Harlem were shocked Wednesday morning when a gas leak lead to a major gas explosion leveling two five-story buildings, according to a statement from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Reports are saying that over 200 firefighters have been battling the fire. The New York City Fire Department is reporting casualties, and many injured. It’s also believed that several people are still unaccounted for.

As fire fighters fought the blaze many people near the seen reported seeing drones flying over the scene.  Some speculated that the local authorities were using drones to monitor the area. This theory wouldn’t be to far of a stretch because a local New York CBS affiliate did a news story on the possibility of NYPD experimenting with drones over the city.

It appears the guys over at gizmodo were intrigued about the possibility that NYPD or FDNY  have  drones on the scene, but when they contacted the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI),  for the NYPD they denied the use of drones over the scene.

In a post on gizmodo covering the story  they mentioned that a reporter from the web site Daily Dot captured a photo of a guy with a DJI Phantom on the scene.
