DJI just released a teaser video for what looks like something from a sci-fi movie. It’s called the Inspire 1 T600.

UPDATE 1: Leaked photos have been released of the Inspired 1. They can be found at the bottom of this page.

UPDATE 2: DJI Will be having a live streaming event for the inspire 1. (Click here for details)

UPDATE 3: More pictures and info has been getting leaked! Supposedly at the live media event, DJI is planning to announce not only the Inspire 1, but also a completely new SDK (software development kit). This would be the first SDK ever released by DJI, which would hopefully allow users and third party companies to develop all kinds of new apps for the Inspire 1. For DJI, adding an SDK with the Inspire 1 (if done properly) could be a very big step towards creating the Ultimate drone for any professional application.

People are also reporting that the new design is able to fit into very small spaces by bending the legs downward. This could be very good for taking it on the plane or even strapping it to your back.

Depending on how the Inspire 1 is designed, it might also have some type of shock absorbers built into the arms. If this is the case, it would be extremely good at eliminating vibrations in video.

UPDATE 4: Leaked video from OctoFilms of the Inspire 1 in action!

So we now know a couple secrets about the Inspire 1 from watching this video. Here’s a list of confirmed features that were spotted in the video:

  • (optional) 2 person operation
  • Auto takeoff and landing
  • Auto Transform
  • Dual antenna controller
  • Ultrasonic sensors
  • Camera is on a vibration mount (like the Phantom 2)
  • There’s a Safe fly mode (whatever that means)

What is the Inspire 1 T600?

Well the short answer is, nobody knows! But a few theories have been floating around lately, each with compelling evidence. So let’s talk about all of the possibilities! Before I talk about any speculation, you should know that none of this is absolute fact. The official specs and release date for the Inspire 1 T600 will be on November 12th.

A Jumbo Phantom

One possibility could be that DJI is coming out with a bigger version of the phantom. basically it would have all of the features of the Phantom vision plus but better. The Inspire 1 would be targeted towards prosumers, people who want something more professional then the Phantom, but easier to use then the bigger models like the S100 and S900. Some people are even saying that the “600” in “T600” could be referring to the size, possibly for 600 millimeters.

Some of the improved features would be:

  • 4K video recording.
  • improved 30 minute flight time.
  • HD video downlink (like an integrated Lightbridge system).
  • Follow me features.

A Flying Wing

Some people believe that DJI is possibly releasing it’s first flying wing (an airplane). With the two teaser videos released by DJI it’s easy to imagine a flying wing based on all of the aero shapes in the video. However, it seems highly unlikely that DJI would release any fixed wing aircraft in the near future. DJI is a company built around multirotor flight controllers and aerial photography equipment. Flying wings can be used for aerial photography, but they’re better suited for long range surveying applications, which in the past isn’t something that DJI has showed any interest in.

A Crazy Transformer Quadcopter!

One of the less popular but equally tangible theories is the idea of a T shaped quadcopter, but not just any quadcopter – a quadcopter that can change form depending on the situation it’s in.

Sounds crazy, right? Maybe not. On january 29th, 2014 DJI filed a patent for a transformable aerial vehicle”. The patent document shows some very interesting pictures of this transforming quadcopter. The document also gives a very long technical description of how it works. Below you’ll see one of the photos from the patent.

In this picture, you can see how the rotors on the aircraft pivot around the main body. This would make it possible to take off and land with the rotors down, and then have them raise up in flight. That way the airframe would never get in the way of your camera while flying.

There’s also some pretty compelling hints in the two videos from DJI that match up perfectly with the patent above. If you watch the video, you’ll notice a very distracting shapeshifting triangle. Maybe it’s just me, but that triangle looks a lot like a transformable aerial vehicle!

Leaked Photos!

Here are some leaked photos from dronesmx.tumblr. Supposedly this is the Inspire 1 doing a test flight. Since the color is white and not black, it might be an early version, but who know, maybe they’ll have it in different colors. If these photos are real (and I’m pretty sure they are) then everything said about the transforming quadcopter is true!
