New DJI Zenmuse H3-3D first thoughts

DJI announced the Zenmuse H3-3D, their next big product for consumer film-makers.

The the Zenmuse H3-3D is just like the original Zenmuse-H3-2D gimbal but with an added third axis of stabilization. This might not seem like a huge improvement from the last gimbal, but it really is, and I’ll tell you why.

DJI has two product categories, one of them being consumer and the other being professional. Their professional gimbals like the zenmuse-z15-5d are great and produced stunning quality video, but on the other hand, the Zenmuse H3-2D also produces good video, but it’s not as good as the bigger gimbals for one reason. The Zenmuse-H3-2D was (and still is) a great gimbal, but the one thing it was lacking was the third axis of stabilization. The Zenmuse H3-3D fixes this issue which makes it almost as good as DJI’s professional line of gimbals. Unfortunately after looking at the PDF manual, I discovered that it’s not possible to do 360 degree manual panning, but at least with a quadcopter like the DJI phantom, you can just use intelligent-orientation-control to pan around objects without worrying about what orientation you’re in.

The gimbal also has a new feature called FPV mode. In FPV mode, the gimbal will follow the movements of the drone on all three axes while still providing smooth stabilization. This feature will be great for people who still want to see the camera moving with the motion of the drone to make it feel more like you’re actually flying.

Now with the Hero3, Phantom 2 and the new H3-2D gimbal, it really can be used as a professional filming tool that will in most cases outperform systems that are three times more expensive.

Supposedly, DJI shipped the gimbal to dealers on March 28 and consumers are just now starting to see them arrive in the mail. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some amazing videos popping up soon. The official price as of right now is $499 (130$ more then the H3-2D).

The Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal is a great solution for people who already have a GoPro and know how to properly use it, but if you’re new to drones and you don’t already have a phantom 2, you might want the super simple all-in-one experience of the new Phantom 2 vision Plus, DJI’s newest quadcopter.

  • 3-axis gimbal
  • Built-in IMU module
  • 168g (62 grams lighter then the old gimbal)
  • Works with all DJI’s flight controllers other then the old NAZA V1
  • It supports the GoPro3 and GoPro3+

One thing I found interesting is that even though the gimbal has more functionality, it’s actually slightly smaller and lighter.

H3-2D VS H3-3D

Here’s a comparison video with the DJI Zenmuse H3-3D and the H3 2D. As you can see in the video, the H3-3D is not just an over priced upgrade. There’s a night and day difference between the to models. Helipal also has a lot of test footage on there youtube channel.
